K T Buggy

Buggy01.jpg

This obelisk emblazoned with a harp and wreath of shamrocks marks the grave of Kevin T Buggy, a young Kilkenny man who succeeded Charles Gavin Duffy as editor of 'The Vindicator' in 1842. The newspaper was the second attempt by Belfast Catholics to become articulate and ran from 1839 to 1852.

Buggy died prematurely only one year after reaching Belfast (1843) and his memorial was erected by 'the 'Repealers', so called because of their support for O'Connell and his futile struggle for the repeal of the Act Of the Union.
